For many good reasons, placed images in InDesign documents are stored as external links, not inside the InDesign documents themselves.
When working with lots of photos or illustrations, you face a number of challenges, like where are the images stored, what file format, resolution and color model are they, what pages are the linked files placed on, and so on. And if you find yourself wanting to replace a bunch of low-resolution images with their high-resolution counterparts, you may be in for some tedious, time-consuming overtime work, unless you know the tricks of the trade.
At this Austin Adobe User Group meeting we’ll explore several aspects of InDesign linked files, based on real world design projects. Among the topics covered, we’ll reveal some ‘secrets’ of the Links panel, relink files to a new folder, and to a different file extension. We’ll also set up the Preflight panel to be able to detect more image related errors. Finally, we’ll use Adobe Bridge to form a virtual ‘bridge’ from InDesign to Photoshop and demonstrate how Photoshops batch processing features can save you even more time.
If time permits, we’ll take a brief look at what’s new in the 2018 InDesign release.

About the presenter
Tom Berglie, a native of Norway, is an Adobe Certified Instructor in InDesign and the Digital Publishing Suite, as well as in Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat. He has more than 20 years’ experience in the publishing business, including several years in charge of production of the Norwegian edition of Computerworld, and as Executive Editor of the Norwegian edition of Publish magazine. Since 2005 he has been running his own teaching and consulting business in Norway, focusing mainly on Adobe creative software. He is also the author of several text books on Adobe InDesign. Tom has relocated to Austin, Texas, and has recently set up business here.
