You are invited to join us online on Thursday, May 14th, 6 pm CST, for the FREE monthly Austin Adobe User Group meeting. In this unconventional program, two free-thinking presenters reveal some of the secrets of successful independent book production and marketing.
A long-time member of our user group, Carol Gunn will interview another graphic designer, Ilene Haddad, about how Ilene designed, produced, and self-published her first book, one filled with funny copy and quirky cartoons, I’ve Seen You Naked Over 8,000 Times: Marriage and Other Risks of a One-Night Stand. We will learn about the various ways in which Ilene (sometimes) employed Adobe Creative Cloud. Carol’s probing questions will explore what hardware and software tools (Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop) Ilene found were needed to create and organize hundreds of her illustrations. We’ll learn her process for selecting engaging fonts and colors for the chapter titles and subheads, body copy, and cover design, along with her techniques for placing her pictures in text on every page and for laying out the 178 pages in Adobe InDesign. She will share lessons learned: techniques that made her labor lighter, along with the big mistakes she intends to avoid in the future.
The Presenters
Award-winning essayist Ilene Haddad is a graphic designer, cartoonist, and author from Austin, Texas. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, Austin’s NPR station (KUT), The Erma Bombeck Writers’ Workshop, the Mixed Bag of Tricks anthology, and other outlets. She is an active member of the Writers’ League of Texas and was presented with the Women Communicators of Austin’s Creative Initiative Award for founding BlogathonATX, a central Texas blogging conference. Ilene lives with her cartoon character of a husband and a little dog named Harry, both of whom appear in her recently published graphic memoir, I’ve Seen You Naked Over 8,000 Times: Marriage and Other Risks of a One-Night Stand.
Carol Gunn is a kickass graphic designer and the sole proprietor of Gunn Graphics, a woman-owned small (very small!) local business in Austin, Texas.
