The Sep. 13 presentation provides answers to the question, “What is instructional design?” Instructional design is the framework for knowledge transfer. This presentation ranges from established standards of the formal science of instructional design (ID) to evolving technologies that create new rationale, from the academic research of cognitive psychology to the daily details of multimedia formatting and integration. Our speaker, Wayne Vermillion, will provide multiple viewpoints while referencing Adobe products and Adobe competitors in instructional design. For instance, participants will understand the skills required in instructional design (ID). You’ll understand the training and education to impart those skills, and you’ll be able to relate your own abilities and even your own personality to the field of instructional design. This is an interactive, dynamic session of knowledge transfer, so come prepared to expand your horizons and learn about instructional design.
Note that this presentation is NOT a Captivate lesson (there will be a Captivate demo), as Captivate does not equal instructional design. You’ll learn that Captivate is just one tool referenced in two of the several phases of instructional design. You’ll learn when Captivate is and is not indicated for best use in instructional design, and how Captivate has been frequently over- and mis-used. Speaking of “nots,” you’ll also be challenged with new, accurate knowledge when the presenter busts some myths about learning.
About the Presenter:
Wayne Vermillion is one of Austin’s most senior and most wide-ranging instructional designers, leveraging an M.S., PMP certification, and a quarter-century of worldwide instructional design success. Wayne is proudest of his success in every phase of the ADDIE instructional design model, experientially rising above many instructional designers who practice only in one or another phase of ID. He has designed and developed thousands of hours of courseware in various media, and is a twice-published technical author (“End to End DSL Architectures,” Cisco Press, and “Multimedia is an Adjective,” Univ. of North Texas Press.) At the program level, Wayne has created several multi-course, blended-learning curricula and whole programs. Wayne says he loves instructional design because he gets to exercise both sides of his mind, the creative and the analytical, in practicing the “art of the possible.”
